FUNDING

Funding is an ongoing challenge. Initially, BLAST was funded by the Grable Foundation for three years and then renewed for another three years. The program also received support from the Pittsburgh Foundation and the Claude Benedum Foundation. The Benedum Foundation asked the BLAST program to run a pilot study in a more rural area of Pennsylvania to see whether the successful urban school program would be successful elsewhere. The BLAST staff trained the local children’s librarian to do the interactive read-aloud program with third-grade students. The library was able to secure funding the following year from a local bank to continue the program.

Currently, the library receives support for the BLAST program from Educational Improvement Tax Credit funding. Businesses in Pennsylvania can pay their taxes to the state through this educational support program. For the last four years, Pittsburgh Public Schools have also provided financial support for the BLAST program. Their contribution covers the books purchased for the classrooms, the bus trips, and miscellaneous and consumable materials, including incentives and other materials to support the thematic programs.
